When it was time to write the book blurb, or what would appear on the back cover of The Hartwell Chronicles: Teenage Exorcist, I went with what my heart spoke about the book. There were no intense research phases or multiple edits, reviews, or tons of beta readers.
I sat in front of my computer and asked myself the following three questions:
1. What matters to the reader?
2. What do I want for them to know?
3. How can I say it without giving spoiler alerts?
Out of the tons of advice and research I could conduct on how to write the perfect book blurb, I needed to go with the Holy Spirit on this one. I have a lovely story to tell of how it was written and it becomes part of my author journey!
My book blurb was written first by me, then critiqued by high school students, my target population. We went through each sentence, reading it aloud, discussing it and determined word choice together. It was an exciting process filled with such great enthusiasm it brought tears to my eyes.
When my graphic designer sent me the final version of my cover, my first thought was to take it back to the English classroom to let them see the work that we accomplished together on the back of the book. I listened as a young man volunteered to read the back cover out loud. I was there to clap with the students and cry happy tears. It mattered to me. It mattered to them. That’s what counts.
