First Things First – 7 Tips to Build Your Author Platform

Click to watch my YouTube video on building your social media platforms

Hey y’all,

It’s nice to sit back and check out my author growth over the past year. It really hit me how far I’ve come while I was in the middle of making a requested YouTube video on social media platforms for authors.

Without social media I would’ve never hooked up with my FABULOUS author friends who are now a part of my circle. I would have never built my author tribe at Jen Lowry Writes Podcast, where we challenge each other, hold each other accountable, and learn along the way! I could keep going how God has opened AMAZING opportunities for me through the use of my author social media accounts. You need to make sure you start yours today!

  1. Set up a gmail account specifically for your author brand. jenlowrywrites@gmail.com was available, which meant I could use this email along with all of my other author account names and match them!
  2. Create a name that is easy to remember. You want people to be able to find you! If you type in Jen Lowry Writes, you’ll get all of my platforms popping up in a Google search.
  3. Get a free Canva account. Start making images, quotes, promotions, etc. Trust me, it’s amazing. Follow my YouTube channel. I’ve made videos specifically on author uses for Canva – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwRR1ecPpKg
  4. Set up Pinterest, Linkedin, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, WordPress, and Goodreads. Link them! Share! Spend five minutes a day connecting with authors, readers, and educators. Find your target audience and follow them! Create events on Facebook, and hold Facebook Live parties! Everything stores for later, and when readers find you they can access your old material! Even if you meet one new person, you’ve connected! Stay positive. It will grow.
  5. If you want to start a podcast, I suggest you try Anchor. If you love listening to podcasts, find my author podcast and join my tribe of over 12,000 active listeners – https://anchor.fm/jen-lowry-writes
  6. If you want to be on AuthorTube – start your YouTube channel today! Start making content! Get comfortable in front of a camera. It will help you in the long run when you’ll be face to face with readers at events. Trust me.
  7. Keep your content consistent, authentic, and share! People love to know about you, your author process, and your WIP! Stay active. Take time. Help others. Stay positive. Help promote other authors. Use social media for good.

I CHALLENGE YOU! After you watch my YouTube video, if you have any specific questions or would like to request a new author video, please don’t hesitate to ask in the comments below or email me at jenlowrywrites@gmail.com and ask away!

Blessings,

Jen Lowry

A Letter from Authors Jim & Stephanie Kroepfl – Following Your Dreams

I’m pleased to introduce you to the authors of Merged, Jim and Stephanie Kroepfl. They wrote us a letter of encouragement about following author dreams, and it’s a blessing!

Following Your Dreams by “Merged” Authors Jim and Stephanie Kroepfl

When people discover we’re authors, we often hear, “I’m going to write a book one day.” And our response is always, “Then, you should do it.” We never discuss how difficult it is to complete that first draft, or share how many more drafts they’re going to face. We don’t want to crush anyone’s dream with the reality of what it takes to become a published author. Everyone, no matter their age, needs a dream.

We met in college, and then entered corporate life. We always found ourselves working on opposite sides of town, and Stephanie traveled for work, so in all those years we may have had lunch together a handful of times. Our careers were interesting, but we weren’t saving lives or working to discover the answer to renewable energy. We were accomplished, but we weren’t passionate about what we were doing. After a while, a nagging voice in our heads began questioning, “Is this it?” It just felt like something was missing.

While Jim took a few night classes, Stephanie started messing around with writing, not expecting it to go anywhere. We’d always been avid readers, but we’d never given serious consideration to actually writing a novel. Then Jim started working on the manuscript, too. We loved the new experience of being creative, and doing it together.

Admittedly, there were a lot of trials and errors while learning how to write side-by-side. The biggest lesson was to get over the hurt feelings when the other hacked away at what we had considered to be brilliant prose. Over time, we came to rely on each other’s strengths and recognized our own weaknesses. Sharing this journey has been the most fulfilling thing either of us has ever done. And we persevered through the road bumps when it didn’t seem like we’d ever be published.

On September 17th we have the privilege of seeing our dream come true. Our young adult science fiction novel “Merged” is being released by Month9Books on September 19, 2019.

7 Book Signing Tips – Lessons Learned

Dog-Eared Books Video of my Book Signing – The Hartwell Chronicles Teenage Exorcist Reading

Hey Y’all,

On Saturday, I was blessed with the wonderful opportunity to share my books at Dog-Eared Books for my first local book signing. It was an amazing day! A college friend from 25 years ago drove down to see me!!! My best friend from home traveled up two hours to see me!!! It was the best day! So many connections were made with readers and my heart was full. I can’t wait for my next event! Here is what I learned from the day:

  1. Create a list of materials to pack and carry, and arrive early to set all your mess up! You would think that carrying your box of books with you to the signing would be a given, right? Well…I’ll admit a funny thing…we left the box of books at home! Having a packing checklist is on my agenda to create! It’s good to arrive 45 minutes earlier to set up, get a feel of the store and work out your nerves, and just have a moment to pray and relax before the time begins. And if you arrive early and you leave your box of books, you might have time to go run and grab them!
  2. Have a special bag to carry all of your mess! Your pens, bookmarks, newsletter signup journal book, tablecloths, baskets, candles, goodies, candy…Pack your bag the night before. If you have a giveaway, make sure you take it. I love to giveaway pretty necklaces for those who sign up to my newsletter, and I’ll have a drawing bag and use post-it notes to write the name on it as soon as they sign up. Print signs and keep them in a folder. Laminate them if you can or get some plastic photo holders to hold them in and use to set up on your table. Take pics of your table setting. Design it at home to get a feel for the way you want everything lined up and take a snapshot to remind you when your nerves hit. It’s a great help, especially if you have someone there to help you set up. You can just show them the pic and get to moving! Keep everything in a special bag so that you can just grab it and go! It’s also super fast for cleanup!
  3. Take all of your copies of all books with you! If you have written multiple books, take them ALL! Even if you are just highlighting the one book at the signing, TAKE THEM ALL! Have backups! You can keep your extra copies in boxes hidden under the table (great to have a long tablecloth). This lends itself to wonderful conversations with readers!
  4. Have social media help! If you can take a partner with you, they can help you sign pictures, send out to social media in real-time, and help promote during and after your event. They can also help you talk to the crowd and get them to sign up to your newsletter while they wait in line.
  5. Record a quick Facebook Live and YouTube video during your event – if you have a slow moment. Record yourself reading an excerpt. Mark an excerpt before going just for the chance! Practice reading it ahead of time.
  6. Promote the bookstore by making special thank you posts and tagging them. Also, purchase merchandise with the bookstore brand on it (if it’s independent, they might have a shirt!) to wear in the future to help promote their store! Show your appreciation for the opportunity to connect with readers!
  7. HAVE FUN! SMILE! ENGAGE! Have no preset expectations going in the door. Take your box of books (still laughing over this one and thanking my husband for driving all the way back home to grab the books), take a prayer on your lips and sealed in your heart, and enjoy your special day. This is about your book, your celebration, your baby in your hands… Don’t forget to be proud of yourself and celebrate. It’s a big day! It’s your day!

Original Poetry – Brick Wall

I stare at the brick wall

It taunts me

Beckons me to take on the challenge

Mocks me with rough edges

I rise up

My hand is tiny

Too small for busting through

No super powers

No wrecking ball

I’m too cordial for that

And now I stare at you

Like you’re another brick wall

But then the spirit whispers

And I smile

You started as sand

You’ll pass through my fingers like you still are

I’ll find one way or another

To make my way around you

Stay standing

I don’t care whether or not you fall

That means I have emotion attached to you

Sorry but I don’t

Who apologizes to brick walls anyway

Not me

Not anymore

Sunday Spotlight Author, Daniel Talley

Stage lights on. Curtain rolls back. Stool on a stage. A mic. A bookshelf illuminated. Crowd hushes. All eyes fall center stage. It’s spotlight time.

I would like to introduce author, Daniel Talley, as the Sunday Spotlight Author of the Week.

Daniel Talley is a motivational speaker, successful small business owner, the Amazon Best Selling and award-winning author of Note 2 Self: Faithful Inspiration and Aspiration. The first of his Note 2 Self Series, this book challenges readers to deepen their relationship with God. Known as “The Note 2 Self Guy” for his uncanny ability to give his readers food for thought about their walk with God through his blogs and books, Daniel shares what he calls “poor man’s proverbs” to inspire and provide new insights into our spiritual walk. A native of Detroit, MI and a US Air Force veteran, Daniel graduated with honors from Howard University. He resides in North Carolina with his loving wife and two children.

You need to check out Note 2 Self! I want to shout it out from the rooftops that this is a MUST READ, 5 STAR book!

Daniel gave us words of wisdom. Here is his word of encouragement to you!

“The greatest advice I can give is for an author to listen to the Holy Spirit. It will guide you on your literary journey and provide you with the resources you need to complete God’s mission. It doing so, the author will enjoy peace and a sense of purpose.”

Let’s all celebrate Daniel today! He is an amazing author and friend! Click here to check out his author pages on Amazon and Barnes & Noble!
